AstraZeneca is currently recruiting for a Senior Statistician in our Waltham, MA R&D location.

This position will be joining AstraZeneca's Discovery Statistics group, which works through partnership with a diverse global customer base. The group is actively focused on delivering significant scientific and business benefit through creative statistical solutions to a wide range of problems. Our statistical input helps to exploit the maximum value from research experiments by improving the quality of data generated and the interpretation of results, whilst reducing costs, saving time and contributing to portfolio diversity.

We have initiated a major strategic investment and are now driving forward to build this capability by recruiting ten statisticians globally over 2009 and 2010. We believe we are unparalleled amongst our competitors in developing Discovery Statistics to this level. We are currently recruiting to fill one key position at our US site in Boston. We are searching for qualified statisticians with strong technical capability and experience in delivering statistical impact. Well-developed communication, consultancy and influencing skills are considered an additional qualification for these roles.

You will work closely with the Bioscience Department which is responsible for identifying, validating and proposing new drug targets followed by carrying out all the relevant in vitro and in vivo testing of drug substances up to candidate drug nomination in cancer and infection disease.

Responsibilities

Reporting to an Associate Director for Discovery Statistics, successful candidates will have primary responsibility for the delivery of statistical input into project teams, identifying and addressing key issues, opportunities and priorities for statistical input, and influencing the implementation of statistical approaches within project workflows. You will also be responsible for the delivery and roll-out of key Discovery Statistics initiatives.

Highly developed communication and influencing skills will be key as the role will involve frequent interactions with other scientists and managers at all levels within the business, e.g. around planning of scientific experiments and statistical analysis of data from both in vivo and in vitro studies.

You will be an important part of a global statistics network, sharing experiences and best practice, working with a global resourcing model and potentially coaching more junior statisticians. An ability to work both independently and as an integral part of the wider statistics team is key to success.

Requirements

• MS in Statistics.
• Subsequent experience in a relevant role.
• Proven technical capability.
• Proven track record in providing statistical input to deliver business impact.
• Experienced user of at least one mainstream statistical package (eg SAS, R or S-Plus).
